My Mask

My Mask

Always better.
<p class="MsoNormal"
What do you do......oy vey

what do you do...

What do you do when you feel like the choices you make are just logical sacrfices?

Or what do you do when you feel like you are cheating yourself because it doesnt make sense the other way around?

I'm so confused and I feel like I'm missing something. And I'm afraid that if I go out and get it, I'll miss something else even more. For example, I would love to move to the city because I think it would be interesting and fun and exciting. Walking around, taking the bus, finding new and different people to talk to. But it kills me to think that if I did that, I would just come back to Renton every weekend or any chance I got.

Same thing if I were to go further south - back to Tacoma. I love tacoma and it is like a home away from home and I feel like I could always go back there and love it as much as I did when I lived there. But, I'd always be coming back to Renton. Is that a sign or am I forcing it to be a sign - I cant tell anymore.

Why am I so afraid of stepping out of what is logical to try other or new things.

Fucking type A...I hate that.

update on my choir's sunday performance...

I went into the main office yesterday at school and the head secretary, Lori - told me to look behind me. The local Auburn Reporter published a picture of some of my students singing at the festival! I was so excited i started jumping and squeaking (Ive had a coughing fit lately). so that was really really awesome.

later on when i got home from work, i had a letter waiting for me. AND IT WAS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT! awesome piece for my portfolio. i was stoked.

thats all...i love my students...they are so fun...

some of the 4th graders insisted on taking a 'fun' picture with me today for the yearbook (elementary year book?-you're thinking...wierd..i know!) but they insisted it be in a Charlies Angel style pose. i just laughed and posed myself in the back (sans the finger gun).

I said this is going to haunt me in the yearbook i jsut know it...and the gal taking the picture just non-chalantly said..yea probably....i laughed...at least it will make good memories for some kids.

My job is better than yours and I have the coolest students...

Today, I took 30 of my 50 choir students to perform at the Auburn PAC for the Uniquely Auburn Diversity Festival. Each of them showed up as planned and at the intermission we gathered and lined up, warmed up all ready to perform.

As we were collecting in the green room one third grader was very disappointed that the green room wasnt in fact green. as she entered she said with a hauty expression "oh my gosh...its not even green!"

I just smiled because that is the joy I get to experience on a daily basis. I told them as they entered that I wanted them in shortest to tallest order. But it was taking too long so I said "You have 30 seconds to get in order. D you are the shortest stand here...W you are the tallest stand there". I counted down and they quickly arranged themselves. There was another performer in the room as I gave them this direction and he looked at me as if this was an unreasonable amount of time for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to assemble themselves. They finished and i made a few adjustments then explained how they would line up on stage. We organized into our 3 rows and started our singing. Our warm up consists of kodaly hand signs and singing and I do it in all my classes so everyone already knew it. We did some roller coasters and warmed up our lips and cheeks.

One of the songs we sang has 2 parts and the 4/5th grade choirs did one part and the 3rd graders did the other. We had practiced in our rehearsals but they had never done it together usually I would fill in with my voice the part that they would hear as they sang. It took the 3rd graders a little longer to catch on to their part and understand the fit of the two parts. The 4/5th graders had about 4 rehearsals with me on this particular song and they nailed it. These kids are so dedicated and are so willing to trust me with the work we can do and it made all the difference.

So I told them I wanted them to hear it with the actual voices that they will sing with and not my voice. So we ran through it twice and it was perfect. My general performance philosophy is that if we can rehearse it in class or in my room then we can just as easily perform it - so I didnt need to pull any studnets out of class for an extra rehearsal or insist that some classes re-arrange their schedule to rehearse for a performance (classroom teachers HATE that). There are some exceptions. So we rehearsed it once then I had them line up for walking on stage and onto the risers. At that point some of them started singing it again and I just chimed in with them.

We had to arrange ourselves on the risers very quietly and they handled themselves very well on stage before the curtain was lifted. then we sang our two songs and they were absolutely amazing. Their voices and the blend and fullness of their sound has grown so much since the beginning of the year. They were focused and attentive and just awesome. I was so proud.

They nailed the sign language for the first song and the 2 part harmonies in the second song were just impeccable. I dont know if they know the level of quality and youthful professionalism they displayed today. I was just tickled pink though. I had no idea they could have sounded as good as they did today. The superintendent was at the performance and she was very pleased and impressed with the choir as well. I wish I could describe their sound better - it was not the sound of children...it was like a well developed youth chorus. I am so happy and thrilled that they had the chance to perform at this festival. Watching them prepare and listening to them practice and seeing them get nervous is such a rewarding feeling.

I have the best job in the world. You may think yours is good or even great...but mine is better. I work with the coolest people all day long - I cant imagine being any more proud or pleased.

Lea Hill Music Club - You Rock My SOCKS OFF!

Funny Things my students say...

It is sayings like these that keep my days bright and remind me why I love what I'm doing.

Adonys - Ms. Lindberg? Why do you use different colors for the points? ( I give them 10 points to start each day, I'll deduct or add points and at the end of class, reward them with a star on their incentive chart - perfect 10's get 2 stars and every 10 stars they earn I'll give them a pencil or sticker or something).

Me - What? I dont understand (doesnt make a difference to me)

Nolin - Its because she's a colorful woman!

I just laughed.

They are a bunch of fun and visit me during recess and any other possible time they can grab my attention. They are the girls that are the leaders of their class and know the limits in the classroom and all the extra time they spend with me is just fun. I tease them a little but always remind them that I just do it cuz I like them. Often they will come into my room when no one is there and I'll put on songs they know or give them the lyrics to new songs and they just come in and sing their little hearts out. It is so cute! They leave me "Love note" and messages on my white boards - usually Ms. L rox! or my favorite was "When you sing it brings more than love and joy to all. But when we find out it was you singing, we want to sing too" i almost cried.

I tease my groupies that they are my worst nightmare -Breanna left me this message on my board one day ....

Other than that I am keeping myself busy outside of school. Mondays I either am coaching for the local youth symphony or at choir rehearsal (I joined the Alumni choir from my High school for a benefit concert). Tuesdays I joined a volley ball team with a bunch of friends. we've lost all our games so far - but it is so much fun! and we've got a ton of spirit...at least i do...Wednesdays I've started a belly dancing class with three girlfriends and that is such a great work out! One of my friends belly danced for 2 years in college and she wanted to get back into it so I convinced her to do a beginners class with me. Thursdays I am still playing in the Renton community band and I keep Fridays sacred for hanging out with friends. So I'm just enjoying any bit of time I can.

It recently snowed insanely too much here in seattle and i dont particularly like the snow - but i did go play one day and made some snow people. they are lushes...perfect
The original - and then her drinking buddy came by - they partied all day......and night....

Thats it for now.
Let it Be Known

let it be known....

Let it be known that today is such an amazing day for me. I've passed another through another door that I should have left closed so long ago. I've realized that by having opened the door I was able to overcome and pass on as opposed to the tenant on the other side who is still in the same damn place I left him 10 months ago. Again silly me for opening but hurray for me for being the better person.

Let it be known that I am 10 times any woman you may ever have. I am better and I have deserved better for a long time. I am smarter, stronger and more of a real self sufficient and self thinking person than you ever have been and maybe ever will be. I can think and feel for myself and therefore accomplish everything by myself and only for myself. I have no one to hinder me or to stop me in my tracks. I will get EVERYTHING I want out of life where as you will give EVERYTHING others want in life and sacrifice yourself - aww such a nice guy. For that I pity you.

Let it be known that you may have hated to said goodbye today but I rejoiced and danced my happy ass all over the place. I could just shit glitter.

Let it be known that I gave this up first and that you had to close the door after I already left. I said my peace - adios.

Let it be known that in maybe 3 or 4 years from now I will be happier than I can even imagine myself to be today. You will probably be exactly where you are right now.

Let it be known that I do have fabulous memories of the times we did have. As dream like as they are I will always have my good memories.

Therefore - just remember that kids run away and you are still irresponsible, dependent and you haven't done anything to prove that you are a man.

FYI - No computer make gina Something something.....

Hello All,
This is just an FYI let you know that I will not have immediate internet access for the next few days. I am moving my computer to Renton and until I figure out the system we're going to use for my internet - I will have limited access. I will probably be able to check my email at least every other day so please be patient with me until about the 1st of July. I anticipate to be fully connected to the internet by that date.

Thanks!

I have too much stuff....

Im moving out of the apartment and have been working on doing so for most of this month. And although I have made a ton of progress, I'm still overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I have to pack up, sort through, get rid of, and transport.

For those of you that dont know, I'm moving back into my parents' house in Renton. Which is nice cuz its not too far but all my stuff is going into storage. I'll miss my bed the most :(

Im proud to say though, that all my books (a total of about 11 boxes) are all done! packed sorted and moved. Now its just the little things that I use everyday that I have to decide if I can live without for a couple weeks. I was hoping to do some substitute teaching during this time but I havent had any calls :( so boo on that too.
Poems to Share!!

This one I found in a Starbucks a few years ago and I liked it (it was written on the walls):

I'm already there
Don't make a sound
I'm the beat in your heart
I'm the moonlight shining down
I'm the whisper in the wind
I'll be there till the end
Can you feel the love that we share
Oh I'm already there!

This one my friend armando sent to me a few years ago. I would like to dedicate this one to Crystal.

Friendship is different from all other relationships.
Unlike acquaintanceship, it is based on love. Unlike
lovers and married couples, it is free of jealousy.
Unlike children and parents, it knows neither criticism
nor resentment. Friendship has no status in law.
Business partnerships are based on a contract. So is
marriage. Parents are bound by the law, as are children.
But friendship is freely entered into, freely given,
freely exercised. Friends never cheat each other, or
take advantage, or lie. Friends do not spy on one
another, yet they have no secrets. Friends glory in
each other's successes and are downcast by the failures.
Friends minister to each other, nurse each other.
Friends give to each other, worry about each other,
stand always ready to help. Perfect friendship is
rarely achieved, but at its height, is an ecstasy.
- E. Ambrose, "Comrades"

Teaching and the MAT - Jenny D. '06

A good friend of mine once told me that in order to have a good conversation you must go into it knowing that what the other person has to offer might change you and your thinking. If you do not approach conversations in this way and you hold on tightly to your own thinking and fail to listen to others you will inevitably not grow as an individual. The key to a good conversation is engaging. When you share your thinking with others and they do the same with you, together you grow and foster new ideas. Your original ideas have either been challenged or agreed upon and either way, you are further along the road to finding what you truly believe. Entering into the MAT program at the University of Puget Sound has been like engaging in a good conversation. I’ve been surrounded by various people from professors, to mentor teachers, and in constant contact with the other students who I have grown with and admired throughout this programs duration. I have had many good conversations with them and have come a long way down the road to becoming both a better future teacher and overall…a better me.

When I think back to my first days of the MAT program I imagine a circle of us in Dixie’s class. We often found ourselves in this circle and it was there that I really began to see what an amazing group of people the MAT program at UPS had brought together. Each day I listened to each person in the class share a little bit more about themselves I began to realize that I was surrounded by people who were passionate about the same things as me. All of us had come from very different backgrounds: some of us had just graduated, others had worked for years, some had been abroad, some were married and had families…yet, each student in our circle brought something new to the conversation…a little piece of them self. Professors added to this mix, and brought in a dimension of people who shared a real passion for teaching. And how could we forget our mentor teachers who have played a huge role by allowing us to come into their classrooms from the very beginning and engaging us and sharing their knowledge and insights. Without these people in my life and throughout this program, I would not be where I am today.

The MAT program has consistently pushed me to look deeper into my thinking and really reflect upon my ideas. Through this process I have grown more passionate about teaching and seeing the children I come into contact with succeed. I strongly believe that all children should have the opportunity to attend a good school and be given knowledge that will help them grow. It saddens me that this is not true in all areas of our country; however, with people like the ones we have in our program, I have become more hopeful for our nations future. We have been given the keys to be successful teachers and have studied, practiced, and reflected upon the various issues that confront educators. And already, I am convinced; we have an amazing group of people who are determined, strong, and compassionate individuals who are going to make a difference.

We all know that teaching is not going to be easy. If we had wanted an easy occupation, we would have done something different. Yet, it is rare that you have the opportunity to touch so many peoples’ lives through a single job. Teachers are privileged in that sense. As a teacher, people will consistently be coming and going through your classroom, and every once in a while there will be that special time when you actually reach a child. It is this time that makes all your bad days worth it, all the hard work you have given priceless, and you feel fulfilled. Never forget the power you hold as a teacher. You may be a light for one of your students, so keep your flame burning bright. Engage your students in good conversation. Even kindergartners will bring in some new insights that you have perhaps not thought about before. To be honest, we may have more to learn from our students than they do from us. Children are an untapped resource of insightful thought and dashing creativity. Never underestimate the power of your students’ minds.

These are a few things that I have come to believe while working through this program. I have had the opportunity to engage in good conversation with incredible people in this program. They are just as responsible for my growth as an individual as I am myself. Each person I have come into contact with has offered a new or different perspective, a little piece of themselves; through these interactions I have found what works for me and what I believe. The more people you come into contact with and actually listen to, the more growing you have the opportunity to do. As future educators we have learned early on that individual growth is constant. We learn through reflection, through further study, and from engaging. These practices ensure a well rounded and thoughtful individual who is ready to jump into the classroom and do something great.

I am writing to inform this school district that I am interested in employment as an elementary music teacher or elementary general classroom teacher. I believe my broad teaching experience and knowledge of current state and national education standards make me an excellent candidate for a teaching position.

My education includes a Masters in the Art of Teacher and a B.M. in Music Education. Through these studies, I have gained in-depth knowledge of music education (K-12) standards and teaching methods as well as general elementary (K-5) education subjects and teaching methods. During my graduate studies, I had the opportunity to explore issues of subject integrated teaching, classroom management, assessment, special education and a variety of current reading, science and math education kits (including FOSS Science Kits, Investigations Math Kits and Making Meaning reading/writing kits). Currently, my Washington state residence teaching certification is pending.

I am currently student teaching in a music classroom at Stanley Elementary in the Tacoma Public School District. In this position, I am able to explore my passion for integrating elements of math, reading and writing into the music classroom. I am working with students on a performance unit that will conclude in a dance and singing ‘Funk Revue’ in June. I use integrated elements to strengthen students’ understanding of music as well as math, reading and writing.

I plan to use my experience in education and my passion to create an integrated music curriculum to refine my teaching style and begin my career. I will also continue to pursue music in my life away from school by teaching flute lessons, coaching the Renton Symphony Youth Orchestra and playing in the Renton City Community Band.

I am excited by teaching opportunities in the Renton School District and I believe I would be a creative and energetic asset to the schools, students and faculty. I can be contacted at (206)-890-2077.

The washcloth - this is hilarious

THE WASH CLOTH

(There is not a woman alive today who won't crack up over this!)

I was due for an appointment with the gynecologist later in the week.
Early one morning, I received a call from the doctor's office to tell me
there was a cancellation and the 9:30am appointment was available. I took it.

I had only just packed everyone off to work and school, and it was already
around 8:45am. The trip to his office took about 35 minutes, so I didn't
have any time to spare. As most women do, I like to take a little extra
effort over hygiene when making such visits, but this time I wasn't going to
be able to make the full effort. So, I rushed upstairs, threw off my
pajamas, wet the washcloth that was sitting next to the sink, and gave
myself a quick wash in "that area" to make sure I was at least presentable.
I threw the washcloth in the clothes basket, donned some clothes, hopped in
the car and raced to my appointment.

I was in the waiting room for only a few minutes when I was called in.
Knowing the procedure, as I'm sure you do, I hopped up on the table, looked
over at the other side of the room and pretended that I was in Paris or some
other such glamorous place a million miles away.

I was a little surprised when the doctor said, "My, we have made an extra
effort this morning, haven't we?". I didn't respond.

After the appointment, I heaved a sigh of relief and went home. The rest of
the day was normal... some shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc.

After school when my six year old daughter was playing, she called out
from the bathroom, "Mommy, where's my washcloth?". I told her to get
another one from the cupboard. She replied, "No!!!".

( Now wait for it......., this is too funny not to be true!!!)

She yelled, "I need the one that was here by the sink, it had all my glitter and sparkles saved inside it."

To Crystal and Ben on the Eve of your first child’s birth

To Crystal and Ben on the Eve of your first child’s birth,

You’re entering a new phase is your life together that I know will be an incredible part of your journey together. The love that you two share will only be strengthened and stretched as Casper Rayne learns and grows under your care. And I know that the love you will have for him will be higher than any mountain and deeper than any sea – almost insurmountable to any other form of love you know, except that which you have for each other. There will be good times and not so easy times but your faith and love for each other are so strong that I know you will face those times with care, love and wisdom. As parents you will continue to grow together and I know that the lessons you will learn will test your confidence. But I have faith that you and in your love and know that you will be amazing providers and teachers to your little one.

I just want you to know that I am so honored to be part of your lives as you take this step not only to watch you two grow as a couple but also as a family. Staying friends with you guys has been an amazing experience for me – especially to watch how a couples’ love can grow and change. I’ve learned a lot from you both about patience, unconditional love and understanding. It’s something I admire dearly about you two and its something I can only dream about for myself (at least for now).

I wish you only the happiest and best of moments as you welcome into this world Casper Rayne Crenshaw.

I love you both,
Gina

something about cleaning

there is something about cleaning that totally distracts me from the rest of the world. it help but to focus on nothing but it! its an obsession enough to make me not think about anything! i go into a trance..and once i start - i CANT stop. some call it sick - some call it crazy - some call it anal..i call it mind numbing, easy and relaxing.

theres only one other thing in this world that can do that for me...well no thats a lie there are two other things - one is swimming and one is hugs. swimming laps focuses me so hard that i forget who i am. i cant think of anything else but how my body is moving in the water. to feel that weightless is indescribible. hugs im picky about - it depends on who its from it has to be from someone who really loves me - like my mom or dad or richard (and a few others). those are some of the best hugs that i dont think i get enough of. i just love standing and feeling the warmth of another body pulsing its life onto mine. i love it when people nuzzle or when i can nuzzle into their necks and feel their hair or head on my shoulders. i love the hugs from my students but its different cuz they are the ones that need the love - not me in that situation. but man there are nights its hard to be alone and not have someone to just hug. it hurts - and i have to wait until something gets messy enough so i can clean it to get that kind of refreshment - because the hugs just arent there...or here...sigh...damn you.

sorry for the lame post. some day im going to humor you with the things my kids say through out the day - man they are great.

To Tim~

Hello Tim,

I met you last weekend at the Pony Keg. You were funny and interesting - or maybe I was just tipsy but I thought you were cute. You bought me and my friends a shot and then insisted that you were NOT going to work up the guts to sing a song with the Karaoke DJ.

Then you left. And lied. And while I can see beyond the lying part (kidding) I was rather upset that you left so abruptly without even attempting to give me your number or even get mine. You said you'd come out this weekend but we'll see my friend - we'll see.

You left and gently shook my hand whilst looking straight into my eyes. I like a chase and a challenge - so this email is just a warning that you better come out on Saturday to the Pony Keg again. And this time make some sort of effort to get to know me beyond the contexts of the bar.

Thanks from your friend,

Gina
